BCS XI kicked off its 2012 campaign with a comprehensive 8-0 win over Commoners. It was an early kickoff in Cambridge, but it didn't take long for the visitors to tally their first goal of the season. Andy Hoot launched a trademark long throw into the box, which Darren Johnson flicked on for Fran Taylor to pick up where he left off last year as the team's leading scorer. Fran bagged another in the first half and was also joined on the score sheet by Andy Vesper and Marco Moreira, who drilled a knuckling shot from 25 yards into the top-right corner.
It was more of the same in the second half. Joe Adu, who started the game in goal, got off the mark by finishing well, while Fran completed his hat trick and Hoot sneaked a well-struck ball from 35 yards inside the far post. The goal of the game, though, must go to Brian Menna, who cut in from the left wing to finish brilliantly with a powerful shot that flashed just inside the far post.
The offensive fireworks were made possible by brilliant defensive play throughout the defense and midfield. Commoners were unable to maintain possession or generate any meaningful attacks from the long ball, and their lack of subs certainly didn't help their energy levels. Full credit to the home team, though, who kept a generally positive attitude throughout the game.
BCS XI was pleased to welcome to the pitch for the first time Peter DeGregorio, Mike Howard, and Paul Fomenky, who all put in strong performances. We look forward to great things to come from our newest signings!
